About us

Two buyers and a long-trained eye

Antiguidades Lisboa is a family business, father and son, built on curiosity, study and a lot of driving.

We are not a shop with a window display. We are buyers. We go after pieces, value them, buy them and place them with the people looking for them, whether collectors, auction houses or contacts built over many years.

Our ground is mostly Portuguese, from ceramics and porcelain to furniture, silver and goldwork, religious art, collectables, painting, books and 20th-century design. We learned most of it on our own, with books open and pieces in hand.

This is a trade of opportunity. You never know what turns up next, and we have bought everything from first editions to antique aircraft propellers. If it is interesting, we study it. If we do not know enough, we say so and go find someone who does.

  • Careful selectionWe only buy what we can value, or what we commit to researching first.
  • Personal serviceYou always speak to one of the two people in the business. There is no call centre.
  • Straight answersIf a piece is doubtful, we say so. We would rather lose a deal than invent one.
  • DiscretionEstates and sales made out of necessity are handled privately. What we see stays with us.

What we buy

The areas we know best

We buy single pieces or entire collections. These are the categories we have most experience in, but the list is never closed.

  • Ceramics and Porcelain

Vista Alegre, Portuguese faience, complete services, factory and studio pieces.

  • Silver and Goldwork

Table silver, candelabra, inkstands, religious silver and Portuguese gold with assay marks.

  • Religious Art and Curiosities

Statuary, gilded woodwork, oratories and anything that escapes the predictable. That is usually our favourite part.

  • Books and Manuscripts

First editions, Portuguese authors, cartography, old documents and complete libraries.

  • Design and Studio Glass

20th-century pieces, contemporary design, art glass, signed furniture and lighting.

  • Sculpture and Decorative Art

Bronzes, metal and stone sculpture, decorative objects and pieces with real presence.

We also buy

  • FurniturePeriod pieces and complete contents.
  • JewelleryGold, silver and stones.
  • CollectablesPostcards, toys, advertising, manuscripts.
  • PaintingPortuguese, 19th and 20th century.

Where we go

From the Minho to the Algarve, when it is worth the trip

We are based in the north, but every region has its own kind of piece, and that keeps us on the road.

Not in any of these areas? Write to us anyway. If the pieces justify it, we will come.

  1. Lisbon and Tagus Valley

Where everything turns up at once, and where many of our best deals happen. We travel there regularly.

  2. North and Greater Porto

Our base. Fast response and, whenever possible, a same-day visit.

  3. Aveiro and Central Portugal

Strong in ceramics, thanks to Vista Alegre and the industries that grew up around it.

  4. Alentejo and Algarve

Faience, religious art and the contents of old houses. We travel when the pieces justify the distance.

Frequently asked questions

What people usually ask us

Is the valuation really free?

It is. Send photographs through the form or by WhatsApp, we give you an estimate, and you are tied to nothing. There is only a deal if we both want one.

How is payment made?

Immediately and in cash, when we collect. No consignment, no commission and no waiting for an auction.

Do you come to my home?

Yes. We go and see the pieces where they are, anywhere in the country. For larger groups or full house contents it is almost always the most practical way.

Do you buy complete house contents?

We do. Estates, house moves and full contents are an important part of what we do, and everything is handled discreetly.

I have no idea whether what I have is worth anything.

That is the most common case. Photograph it however you can, even badly, and send it over. We will tell you honestly whether it has value. If it does not, we will say that too.

I have stamps, coins or a classic car.

That is not our speciality and we will not pretend otherwise. But we have contacts in those fields and can value or refer you. Talk to us before you sell.
